How to set up a DVB-T2 terrestrial antenna by yourself

If you do not want to seek professional help, you can tune a DVB-T antenna yourself to receive digital terrestrial television. This is not too difficult – just remember the correct placement of the TV antenna and orient it towards the nearest transmitter.

A few words about DVB-T2 antenna placement

The antenna should be installed at the highest possible point, preferably on the roof, but it can also be mounted on the building’s facade. The main requirement is that there should be no obstacles, such as tall trees, between the antenna and the transmitter. If something blocks the antenna, choose another installation spot or use a mast to raise the antenna above the obstacles.

Adjusting the DVB-T2 terrestrial antenna

If the antenna is already installed, we can proceed with the tuning. Point the antenna towards the nearest TV transmitter. Usually, this is straightforward — the transmitter antenna is located on top of a tall mast visible from many kilometers away. If this is not the case, determine the transmitter’s direction using a map and then set the antenna accordingly, either by eye or with the help of a compass. You can also use a smartphone app that functions as an electronic compass.

After orienting the antenna, make sure it is positioned horizontally (not upwards, not diagonally, and not downwards) and tighten the screws securing it to the mount, leaving a slight slack so it can still be adjusted left or right.

If you have already pointed the antenna towards the nearest DVB-T2 transmitter, half the work is done. Now you need to capture the TV signal and fine-tune the antenna to achieve the best possible signal quality. This is important because even if all channels appear initially, reception may worsen in adverse weather. The best antenna positioning can be found in two ways: using a TV signal meter or by observing the quality and strength indicators in the TV or receiver menu.

In most cases, the antenna is mounted in such a way that you cannot both rotate it and watch the screen at the same time. Therefore, you may need to either take the TV to the roof or ask someone to help. In the TV menu, find the antenna tuning option and try to capture the signal by carefully moving the antenna from the far left position to the right in small increments. After each adjustment, wait a few seconds for the TV to adapt to the new setting. Once a signal is received, fine-tune the antenna with even smaller movements to achieve the best signal quality and strength. Prioritize signal quality over raw strength, as higher quality ensures more reliable reception than high strength with low quality.

If it is difficult to find the exact direction, you can use the opposite method — slowly turn the antenna until you reach the extreme left and right positions where the signal disappears. The midpoint between these two extremes will be the correct alignment towards the transmitter.
