A bit per second, bit/s (bits per second, bps) is the basic unit for measuring the speed of data transmission.
In baud, the speed is measured taking into account service bits (start/stop/parity, redundancy). In some cases, speeds in baud and bit/s may coincide, but more often they differ. The baud rate for data exchange varies in different standards and depends on the encoding method used.
To indicate higher data transmission speeds, larger units are used, formed with SI prefixes Ñ kilo-, mega-, giga-, etc., resulting in:
kilobits per second Ñ kbit/s (kbps, kbit/s or kb/s)
megabits per second Ñ Mbit/s (Mbps, Mbit/s or Mb/s)
gigabits per second Ñ Gbit/s (Gbps, Gbit/s or Gb/s)
