A type of modulation of electromagnetic waves in wired and radio communication channels for data transmission. This modulation type is used, for example, in deep space telemetry. The carrier wave phase values take on 0 and 180 degrees. The information density per channel bandwidth (per symbol, per hertz) equals one.
Figure 1 shows a BPSK signal synchronized in time with the changes of the modulating digital signal.
The BPSK signal is, in fact, a double-sideband suppressed carrier (DSBSC) signal. Therefore, traditional DSBSC modulators and demodulators can be used both to generate a BPSK signal and to recover data from it.
With all other advantages being equal, the BPSK method offers the highest noise immunity, ensuring the lowest number of errors during data reception.
