CDMA – Code Division Multiple Access – multiple access with code division. Unlike other radio communication technologies (FDMA, TDMA), in which the available frequency spectrum is divided into narrowband channels and time slots, the CDMA system distributes signals over a wide frequency band.
In channel code division schemes – CDMA – codes (a unique sequence of bits) are used to separate MS of different users in the code space. A unique encoding scheme for each individual connection in the CDMA system almost completely eliminates crosstalk and significantly reduces interference from other sources.
Unlike other schemes, CDMA technology offers the advantage of easy channel switching and smoothly variable cell capacity. CDMA provides more efficient use of the available frequency spectrum, delivering a significant increase in capacity. The capacity of a CDMA system is 10–20 times higher than that of analog AMPS systems and at least three times higher than other digital communication technologies such as TDMA and GSM.
