The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is a non-profit European standards organization in the field of telecommunications and communications. It develops globally applicable standards for information and communication technologies, including fixed, mobile, broadcasting, and Internet technologies. The institute has standardized the GSM cellular communication system, the DMR digital radio communication system, and TETRA systems.
ETSI was established in 1988 and has been officially recognized by the European Commission and the EFTA Secretariat. Its responsibilities include standardizing information and telecommunication technologies in Europe. ETSI has over 800 members, including vendors, telecom operators, government bodies, service providers, research institutes, and design bureaus.
The main task of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute is to identify common standards on which a unified telecommunication structure can be built. This structure must ensure full compatibility of any equipment and services offered to consumers. ETSI’s activities are closely aligned with market needs, and its products receive global recognition.
The institute’s main products are technical documentation specifying the requirements for various types of telecommunication equipment. These documents fall into several categories: standards, technical specifications, technical reports, special reports, guidelines, and others. Each type of document differs in the nature of its content, purpose, and procedures for development and approval.
ETSI has a Technical Committee on Transmission and Multiplexing (TM), responsible for standardizing the functions and characteristics of transport networks and their elements. This committee includes Working Group TM6, which focuses on xDSL technologies. In particular, ETSI TM6 is engaged in adapting the ANSI T1.413i2 standard to European conditions.
