Land Mobile Radio (LMR), or private land mobile radio communication, is a wireless communication system intended for use by land-based users in vehicles (mobile radios) or on foot (portable devices). Such systems are used by emergency response organizations, such as police, fire departments, and ambulance services; public works organizations; dispatch services, such as taxi companies; or businesses with vehicle fleets or field personnel.
Such a system can operate independently (intra-agency) or be built on a public network, such as the public switched telephone network, a trunked network, or a cellular network.
