Short radio waves (also known as decameter waves) are radio waves with frequencies from 3 MHz (wavelength 100 m) to 30 MHz (wavelength 10 m).
Short waves can propagate as ground waves in the low-frequency part of the band, and as ionospheric waves. Ionospheric short waves can travel thousands of kilometers without requiring high transmitter power. Therefore, short waves are mainly used for long-distance communication and broadcasting. Their propagation is characterized by the formation of a “skip zone” and the occurrence of radio echoes.
Amateur radio operators are allocated the following HF bands:
| HF Bands | |
| 160 meters | 1.9 MHz |
| 80 meters | 3.5 MHz |
| 40 meters | 7 MHz |
| 30 meters | 10 MHz |
| 20 meters | 14 MHz |
| 17 meters | 18 MHz |
| 15 meters | 21 MHz |
| 12 meters | 24 MHz |
| 10 meters | 29 MHz |
