The first thing to consider when choosing a handheld radio is its case size and shape. These parameters play a primary role when selecting a portable radio. The case should not have sharp edges or protruding control knobs and buttons. The body shape can be divided into flat and shortened. In the first case, the radio is taller and thinner, making it convenient to carry on a belt or in a pocket. In the second case, the radio is more compact but thicker, more convenient to carry in hand or on a wrist strap.
The case shape of a handheld radio is determined by the placement of the battery pack. With rear-mounted batteries the case is thicker and shorter, while with bottom-mounted batteries the case is flatter and taller. Note that replacing the battery with a higher (or lower) capacity version may change the device size — increasing thickness in the first case and height in the second.
The main parameter of a battery pack is its capacity. Pay attention to the “operating time (standby/transmit)” specification. Evaluate whether one battery will last through a shift or whether a spare will be required.
The second important factor is the operating temperature range. Most batteries discharge quickly in cold weather. Some radios provide an adapter that allows carrying the battery under clothing.
The number of charge/discharge cycles indicates the battery lifespan. This parameter is approximate and highly dependent on usage conditions. Overcharging and especially deep discharging have a detrimental effect. Some battery packs include automatic protection against overcharge/discharge.
The battery significantly affects the weight of the radio. Here the rule is simple — the lighter, the better.
Antenna — a radio component that determines communication range even more than transmitter power. The antenna length of handheld radios generally affects range linearly. Telescopic antennas are longer but less mechanically durable than flexible spiral antennas. In most cases, handheld radio antennas are non-tunable, designed to operate adequately across the entire frequency range. This universality is the main drawback of handheld antennas. The situation can be improved if the radio is available in modifications for specific sub-bands, where a narrower band provides better antenna performance.
It is also important to consider the mechanical durability of the handheld radio and the reliability of component fastening. The battery must be securely fixed without play. The antenna should be sufficiently flexible, and a threaded connector is preferable. Many radios comply with dust-, moisture-, and vibration-resistance standards.
If you plan to operate on a single frequency, then a LCD screen is unnecessary. However, if you intend to use DTMF keys or other service functions, then keypad and screen backlighting is desirable.
Additional accessories. You may need an external headset or extended antenna. Check compatibility with additional devices. One of the most important accessories is a belt holster with a clip for carrying the radio on your waist.
