DigiTOP VA-32A/63A voltage protection relay — product overview

Purpose

The DigiTOP VA-32A-63A-63 series VA-protector voltage relay (hereinafter, the device) is designed to protect the load against increased or decreased mains voltage and against overload (exceeding the specified current value).

Operating principle

The device simultaneously performs the functions of a voltage relay and a maximum current relay. Control is performed by a microcontroller that analyzes the voltage and current in the load circuit while displaying the current RMS values on the digital indicator.

Current is measured using a built-in current transformer. Load switching is performed by an electromagnetic relay. The device can operate both with a 50 Hz domestic power grid and with power sources having an unstable frequency (generators, etc.). To do so, select the appropriate operating mode in the settings menu. Acceptable disconnection limits and the switch-on delay time are set by the user using the buttons on the front panel. New values are stored in non-volatile memory.

Mounting procedure and commissioning

The device is mounted on a TS-35 (DIN rail). The enclosure occupies three 17.5 mm modules.

Install the device on a 35 mm DIN rail. Connect the wires according to the wiring diagram. The cross-section of two conductors must not exceed 16 mm. The length of the contact portion of the conductor is 14 mm. When using a stranded conductor, cable lugs must be used.

When installing the device in damp rooms (bathroom, sauna, swimming pool, etc.), it must be placed in a mounting box with a degree of protection not lower than IP55 (dust-protected; protected against water jets from any direction).

Operating procedure

When power is applied (initial state), the upper indicator of the device will flash and display the RMS voltage value.

The current value will be zero (lower indicator), because at this moment the output relay of the device is open. If the voltage is within the set range (factory setting: 170–250 V), the relay will switch on after the specified time (factory setting: 15 s) and the indicator will stop flashing. If the voltage goes beyond the set range (<170 V or >250 V), the relay will not switch on until the voltage returns to normal. When a load is connected, the lower indicator will display the current value in the circuit.

The device monitors the current of the connected load and can operate as a power limiter. In this case, the load will be disconnected when the rated current (Inom) is exceeded after 10 minutes, and when the maximum current (Imax) is exceeded after 0.04 s. This function can be disabled if necessary (enabled by default).

Using the buttons, the user can set:
- the lower voltage trip threshold;
- the upper voltage trip threshold;
- the switch-on delay time when protection is triggered by voltage or current;
- the state of the power limiter (on or off).

To change the default parameters, press the corresponding button on the front panel of the device.

With a short press of the ▲ button, the device shows the upper trip threshold (on the upper indicator). If held for more than 5 seconds, the device switches to the upper threshold setting mode (a dot in the lower right corner of the indicator flashes). Use the ▲ and ▼ buttons to set the required value.

With a short press of the ▼ button, the device shows the lower trip threshold (on the upper indicator). If held for more than 5 seconds, the device switches to the lower threshold setting mode (a dot in the lower right corner of the indicator flashes). Use the ▲ and ▼ buttons to set the required value.

With a short simultaneous press of both buttons ▲ ▼, the device shows the switch-on delay time (on the upper indicator). If held for more than 5 seconds, the device switches to the delay setting mode (a dot in the lower right corner of the indicator flashes). Time is displayed in seconds. Use the ▲ and ▼ buttons to set the required delay time. The time setting step is 5 seconds.

With a short press of the button, the device shows (on the lower indicator) the power limiter state: “On” — enabled, “OFF” — disabled. If held for more than 5 seconds, the device switches to the power limiter state setting mode (the value on the lower indicator flashes). Use the ▲ and ▼ buttons to enable or disable the power limiter.

The device exits the settings mode automatically 10 seconds after the last button press.

The modified parameters are saved in the device’s non-volatile memory.

For refrigerators and systems with small-power compressors, it is recommended to set the switch-on delay parameter to at least 300 s (5 min).

During operation, it is necessary to monitor fastening of the device on the DIN rail, the condition of electrical connections, and the tightening of terminal block screws.

Attention!

If protection is triggered by any parameter (voltage or current), the load is disconnected from the network.

When voltage protection is triggered, the corresponding (upper) indicator flashes and displays the RMS voltage value. The load will switch on automatically after the voltage returns to the set limits and the configured switch-on delay has elapsed.

When current protection is triggered, the lower indicator shows the scrolling message “OVERLOAD”; at the same time, the relay continues to monitor the mains voltage and, if it goes beyond the set limits, does not switch on the load. To switch on the load, briefly press the button. After pressing, the lower indicator will display flashing zeros “0.0” and the countdown of the configured switch-on delay will begin, after which the load will be switched on.

If the mains voltage is absent for more than 1 s, the device returns to its initial state (the current and voltage indicators flash). There are no restrictions on using the device in residential, commercial, and industrial zones.

During operation, it is necessary to monitor fastening of the device on the DIN rail, the condition of electrical connections, and the tightening of terminal block screws.

Safety measures

According to the method of protection against electric shock, the device complies with Class 2 per GOST 12.2.007-75.

Installation and maintenance of the device must be carried out by qualified personnel who have studied this operating manual. During operation and maintenance, the requirements of GOST 12.3.019-80, the “Rules for Technical Operation of Electrical Installations of Consumers,” and the “Safety Rules for Operation of Electrical Installations of Consumers” must be observed.

If a malfunction is detected, DE-ENERGIZE the device (disconnect power supply).

The device uses life-threatening voltage — DO NOT CONNECT THE DEVICE WHEN DISASSEMBLED!!!

Storage, transportation, and operation conditions

Storage conditions — category “C” according to GOST 15150 — enclosed or other unheated rooms with natural ventilation.

Climatic storage factors:
- ambient air temperature: ?50 °C... +50 °C;
- average annual relative humidity: 75% at +15 °C.

Transportation conditions with respect to mechanical factors — category “C” according to GOST 23216.

The device is operable in any spatial orientation.

The device is not intended for operation under vibration and shock, nor in explosive atmospheres. Moisture ingress onto the input contacts of terminal clamps and internal elements of the device is not allowed. Use in aggressive environments containing acids, alkalis, oils, etc., is prohibited.

Correct device operation is guaranteed at an ambient temperature from ?25 °C to +50 °C and a relative humidity from 30 to 80%. For operation at negative temperatures, to avoid condensation due to temperature fluctuations, the device must be installed in a moisture-proof enclosure. Service life is 10 years. After the service life expires, to ensure safety and protection of equipment, the device is recommended to be replaced, even if it is operational. The device is not subject to mandatory disposal.

Warranty obligations

The warranty period of operation is 36 months from the date of sale.

The manufacturing date is indicated on the sticker on the device housing. During the warranty period, the manufacturer performs repair in case of failure, provided that the consumer complies with the rules of storage, connection, and operation.

Warranty service is provided upon presentation of a mark from the selling organization.

The device is not covered by warranty service in the following cases:
1. Expiration of the warranty period.
2. Operating conditions and electrical wiring diagram do not comply with this “Operating Manual” supplied with the device.
3. Independent repair by the user.
4. Evidence of mechanical damage (tamper-evident seals broken, poor condition, external scorching of power terminals).
5. Evidence of moisture ingress, foreign objects, dust, dirt inside the device (including insects).
6. Lightning strike, fire, flooding, lack of ventilation, and other causes beyond the manufacturer’s control.
