Frequency scanning is the sequential cycling through frequencies generated by heterodynes (oscillators) or a frequency synthesizer in a transceiver or receiver. The scanning step (minimum frequency change) and the scanning speed are determined by the design of the device. When a signal is detected on a particular frequency, scanning is paused, allowing the operator time to assess the usefulness of the information in the signal. Scanning can then be stopped manually or continued automatically.
