Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Arm Style Electronic Blood Pressure Monitor, a fully automatic digital blood pressure monitor based on the oscillometric method. It measures arterial blood pressure and pulse rate quickly and easily. The device stores the last measurement result in memory.

Intended use

The automatic upper-arm Arm Style blood pressure monitor is intended for measuring arterial blood pressure and pulse rate in individuals whose upper-arm circumference matches the cuff specification and when the instructions in this manual are followed.

It is recommended primarily for home use. Before beginning to use the device, please read the section of this user manual titled “Important safety information”.

(i) Before using the device, read this manual carefully. CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN regarding your specific target blood pressure values.

Features and functions

The automatic upper-arm Arm Style monitor is easy to operate, accurate, fast, convenient, and portable. It is equipped with a liquid crystal display and specifically designed for self-measurement at home. The monitor displays the average of the last 3 readings, has memory for 2 users (99 measurements each), shows blood pressure and pulse simultaneously, and turns off automatically.

Blood pressure level indicator

After a measurement, the indicator lights up next to the zone corresponding to the obtained blood pressure value: green — optimal pressure, yellow — elevated, red — critically high. This function helps you interpret your results independently.

Clock with calendar

The device displays the time and date on the screen and logs blood pressure readings with a time and date stamp. Memory block: It allows the monitor to store your recent measurements. This function is essential for people who need to monitor their blood pressure over long periods. It avoids the need to write readings down each time, as values can be recalled with a single button press. Memory for two users, 99 measurements per user.

Artificial intelligence

This function allows the automatic device to determine the inflation level on its own. The device estimates the upper (systolic) pressure limit and inflates the cuff to 30–40 units above that value, thereby avoiding excessive compression of the arm.

Important safety information

If you are pregnant or have been diagnosed with arrhythmia or arteriosclerosis, consult your physician before using this device. Read this section carefully before use.

(i) Warning!
• Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that could result in death or serious injury.

(General use)
• Always consult your physician. Self-diagnosis based on measurement results and self-treatment are dangerous.
• Individuals with severe circulatory disorders or blood diseases must consult a physician before use, as cuff compression may cause internal bleeding.

(Using the AC adapter)
• Do not plug in or unplug the power cord with wet hands.

(Using batteries)
• If battery electrolyte gets into the eyes, immediately rinse with plenty of clean water. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.

(General use)
• Do not leave the device unattended in the presence of children or persons who are not responsible for their actions.
• Use the device only to measure blood pressure.
• Do not disassemble the device or cuff.
• Use only the cuff intended for this device. Using other cuffs may lead to inaccurate results.
• Avoid wrapping the air tube around parts of the body during measurement. Increased pressure in the tube may cause injury.
• Do not leave the cuff on the arm during nighttime measurements. This may cause injury.
• Do not inflate the cuff above 299 mmHg.
• Do not use a mobile phone or other devices that emit electromagnetic waves near the device. This may cause malfunction.
• Do not perform measurements in a moving vehicle (car, airplane).
• For information on manual cuff inflation, see Chapter 3.3. Excessively high cuff pressure may cause internal bleeding.

(Using the AC adapter)
• Use only the original AC adapter (purchased separately) intended for this device. Using other adapters may cause damage and/or device failure.
• Connect the AC adapter to an outlet with appropriate voltage.
• Do not use the AC adapter if the device or power cord is damaged. Immediately disconnect power and unplug from the outlet.

(Using batteries)
• If battery electrolyte contacts skin or clothing, immediately rinse with plenty of clean water.
• Use only four AAA alkaline batteries in this device. Do not use other types of batteries.
• Observe correct polarity when installing batteries.
• Replace depleted batteries promptly. Replace all four batteries at the same time.
• If you do not intend to use the device for three months or longer, remove the batteries.
• Do not use new and old batteries together.

General precautions
• Do not subject the device and cuff to strong impacts or vibrations; do not drop them on the floor.
• Do not take measurements immediately after bathing, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical exercise, or eating.
• Do not bend the cuff forcefully or kink the air tube.
• Do not inflate the cuff when it is not wrapped around the upper arm.
• Do not wash or immerse the cuff in water.

Preparation

Installing/replacing batteries

1. Turn the electronic unit upside down.
2. Slide the battery cover in the direction of the arrow while pressing the knurled area.
3. Install or replace four AAA batteries so that the + (positive) and ? (negative) ends match the polarity indicated in the battery compartment.

4. Reinstall the battery cover. Slide the cover as shown until it clicks into place.

(i) Note: Measurement values remain in memory even after battery replacement.

Battery life and replacement

If the low battery indicator () appears on the display, replace all four batteries at the same time. Turn the device off before replacing batteries.

A new set of alkaline batteries provides approximately 500 measurements. If measuring three times per day, the Arm Style monitor can be used for about 5 months (temperature 22 °C, pressure up to 170 mmHg (22.7 kPa), arm circumference about 30 cm).

Battery life will be reduced at low temperatures.

Use alkaline batteries; otherwise service life may be short.

A new set of Zn-Mn salt batteries can be used approximately 140 times.

The device is supplied with Zn-Mn salt batteries intended for pre-sale testing and customer demonstration; therefore, their actual service life may be less than 140 uses.

• If you do not intend to use the device for three months or more, remove the batteries.
• Dispose of used batteries in accordance with local regulations.

Using the AC adapter

(!) Attention!
When connecting to AC power, use a stabilized power supply; otherwise, device malfunction may occur.

1. Connect the stabilized power adapter to an AC outlet.

2. Plug the adapter connector into the monitor.

3. Using the automatic Arm Style blood pressure monitor

Placing the cuff on the arm

For accurate results, ensure that the cuff is wrapped correctly around the upper arm. Measurements may be taken over light clothing. Remove tight clothing such as sweaters before measurement.

(i) Note:
The cuff may be placed on the left or right arm. Blood pressure can differ between arms; accordingly, measurement results may also differ.

1. Insert the air plug into the socket on the left side of the device.

2. Place the cuff on the upper arm. The air tube should run downward along the inner side of the arm and be aligned with the middle finger.

3. After positioning the cuff correctly, fasten it securely with the hook-and-loop fastener.

Measurements on the right arm

When measuring on the right arm, position the cuff so that the air tube is on the elbow side.

(i) Notes:
• Do not rest your arm on the tube or otherwise restrict airflow to the cuff.
• Position the cuff 1–2 cm above the elbow crease.

Performing a measurement

1. Sit on a chair with your feet flat on the floor and rest your arm on a table so that the cuff is at heart level. Do not move or talk during the measurement.

Measure at the same time each day on the same arm and in the same posture. Changing cuff position may alter the result.

It is preferable to measure your baseline blood pressure upon waking, before using the restroom.

Do not touch the device, cuff, or air tube during measurement. Maintain a calm and relaxed state.

Before measurement, remain quiet for at least 5 minutes; relax the body, arm, and fingers; minimize muscle activity; and do not speak during the measurement.

If you need to repeat the measurement, wait 4–5 minutes before taking another reading.

Measurement errors

Sitting with legs crossed or tucked under the body
Leaning the head or torso forward
Sitting on a sofa or a chair of unsuitable height, which may cause the body to bend
Incorrect arm/cuff position leads to negative effects on pressure readings; positioning the arm below heart level results in higher measured blood pressure.

The ideal difference in height between table and chair should be 25–30 cm. Place a cushion under the arm if necessary.

Automatic measurement mode

Press the device’s power button to turn it on.

The Arm Style monitor will begin inflating the cuff.

Please do not move or talk throughout the measurement.

The device will automatically complete the measurement and display the result. (If “mmHg” appears on the screen, the unit of pressure is mmHg; otherwise, kPa.) A model with a voice function will announce the results and issue an alert if limits are exceeded.

The device automatically stores blood pressure and pulse values in memory.

(i) Note: To cancel a measurement, press the O/I START button to turn the device off and release the air from the cuff.

(i) Notes:
• Self-diagnosis and self-treatment based on the results are dangerous. Follow your physician’s advice.
• Before repeating a blood pressure measurement, wait 2–3 minutes. During this time, the arteries return to their state prior to the first measurement.

• Recent studies suggest that the following values may be used as a reference for elevated home blood pressure:
Systolic blood pressure: Above 135 mmHg
Diastolic blood pressure: Above 85 mmHg

Undo the fastener and remove the cuff.

Press the power button to switch the device off.

(i) Note: If you forget to turn the device off, it will switch off automatically after five minutes.

Maintenance and storage

Maintenance

To protect the device from damage, observe the following rules.

• Do not expose the device and cuff to high temperatures, humidity, moisture, or direct sunlight.
• Do not roll the cuff or tube too tightly.
• Do not disassemble the device.
• Do not subject the device to strong shocks or vibrations (for example, do not drop it on the floor).
• Do not use volatile liquids to clean the device.
• Do not wash or immerse the cuff in water.
• Do not use gasoline, thinners, or solvents to clean the cuff.
• Do not attempt repairs yourself.

If a defect is detected, consult an OMRON representative or the distributor indicated in the appendix to the user manual.

• Clean the device with a soft, dry cloth.
• To clean the cuff, use a soft damp cloth and mild soap.
