2. Battery Charging
2.1 Charging the Rechargeable Battery
The lithium-ion battery is not charged at the factory; charge it before use. Charging the battery for the first time after purchase or after extended storage for more than 2 months may not immediately restore its normal maximum operating capacity.
For optimum performance, the battery should be fully charged and discharged two or three times before its operating capacity reaches its optimum level.
The battery may have reached the end of its service life when its operating time decreases even after it has been fully and correctly charged. In this case, replace the battery pack.
2.2 Supplied Charger
Use the specified charger supplied by BAOFENG. Other charger models may cause an explosion and personal injury. After installing the battery, if the radio indicates a low battery level by means of a voice prompt, charge the battery.
2.3 Lithium-Ion Battery Precautions
a. Do not short-circuit the battery terminals or dispose of the battery in fire. Never attempt to remove the battery casing, because BAOFENG accepts no responsibility for accidents caused by battery modification.
b. The ambient temperature must remain within 5°C-40°C (40°F - 105°F) while the battery is charging. Charging outside this range may prevent the battery from being fully charged.
c. Switch off the radio before inserting it into the charger. Otherwise, correct charging may be affected.
d. To avoid interrupting the charging cycle, do not disconnect the power supply or remove the battery during charging until the green indicator illuminates.
e. Do not continue charging the battery after it is fully charged. Doing so may shorten battery service life or damage the battery.
f. Do not charge the battery or radio while it is wet. Dry it before charging to prevent damage.
(!)
WARNING!
If keys, decorative chains, or other conductive metal objects come into contact with the battery terminals, the battery may be damaged or cause personal injury. If the battery terminals are short-circuited, a considerable amount of heat will be generated.
Exercise caution when carrying and using the battery. Always place the battery or radio in an insulated container. Do not place it in a metal container.
2.4 Charging Procedure
a. Connect the AC adapter to an AC outlet, then connect the AC adapter cable to the DC connector on the rear of the charger. The indicator flashes orange, after which the charger is ready to charge the battery.
b. Insert the battery or radio into the charger. Ensure that the battery terminals make proper contact with the charging terminals. The indicator illuminates steadily red, indicating that charging has started.
c. A full battery charge requires approximately 2-5 hours. When the indicator turns green, charging is complete.
Remove the battery or the radio with the battery installed from the charger slot.
When the radio is being charged with the battery installed, the indicator lamp will not turn green to indicate a full charge if the radio is switched on. The indicator operates normally only when the radio is switched off. The radio consumes power while switched on, and the charger cannot determine the correct battery voltage when the battery is fully charged. Consequently, the charger will continue charging the battery in constant-voltage mode and will not be able to correctly indicate when the battery is fully charged.
2.5 Charger LED Indicator
Use only chargers recommended by the manufacturer. The color of the charger LED indicates the charging process:
Charging status Indicator color Standby (no load) Green and red flash alternately Charging Red continuously illuminated Fully charged Green continuously illuminated Error Red flashes rapidly for an extended period
(!) NOTE: An error indicates that the battery is too hot, the battery is short-circuited, or the charger is short-circuited.
2.6 Battery Storage
a. If the battery must be stored for an extended period, keep it at approximately 80% charge.
b. Store it at a low temperature in a dry environment.
c. Keep it away from hot locations and direct sunlight.
(!)
Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.
Never attempt to remove the battery casing.
Never store the battery in an unsafe location because a short circuit may cause an explosion.
