"Swing", "Air direction", "Air flow" or "Flap Air" Modes in Air Conditioners: Airflow Direction Control
Purpose of Airflow Direction Adjustment Function
The airflow direction adjustment function manages the position of air conditioner louvers to change the direction of the discharged air. This allows for even air distribution throughout the room or concentrating airflow in a specific zone. Adjustment can be made vertically and horizontally, either manually or via the remote control.
Airflow Direction Control Buttons
The air conditioner remote control usually features buttons labeled "Swing", "Air Flow", "Air Direction", "Flap Air", or "Direct". The "Swing" button activates automatic vertical swinging of the louvers up and down. Each subsequent press adjusts the deflection angle stepwise, typically by a fixed increment. The "Direct" button allows manual adjustment of the vertical louvers’ angle within a permissible range. Some models also allow horizontal airflow angle adjustment via the remote.
Swing Mode (Swing Mode / 3D-Air)
Swing mode provides even airflow distribution. When activated, vertical louvers automatically move up and down. Holding the "Swing" or "Swing/Direct" button for several seconds enables continuous swinging. Pressing the button again stops the louvers’ movement. This mode is especially useful to prevent drafts and enhance comfort indoors.
In some models, the function may be labeled as 3D-Air or 4D-Air, creating volumetric airflow across the entire room without drafts or risk of chilling. Activating the mode causes the louvers to swing vertically and horizontally, reaching difficult room areas.
Fixed Airflow Direction
Users can manually set a fixed airflow direction with louvers stationary. Using the "Direct" button, the louver angle changes stepwise. This setting is convenient for personal comfort, such as diverting airflow away from work or sleeping zones or directing air toward specific objects.
Horizontal Air Distribution
Horizontal airflow can be manually adjusted by moving vertical deflectors or, in some models, via remote control. Vertical louvers should be rotated according to instructions to avoid mechanism damage. Some models support automatic horizontal swinging for even better air distribution.
Vertical Air Distribution
Vertical airflow can be adjusted manually by moving horizontal deflectors or, in some models, via remote control. Horizontal louvers should be rotated only as per instructions to prevent damage. Some models support automatic vertical swinging for more even airflow distribution.
Precautions When Using the Function
During extended cooling or dehumidification, it is not recommended to set vertical louvers close to vertical. This may cause condensate formation on louvers, dripping onto the floor or furniture. Also, avoid manually moving louvers when automatic control is enabled to prevent synchronization issues. If louvers behave irregularly, restarting the device is advised to restore normal operation.
Note on Louver Angle Adjustment
When operating in cooling or dehumidification modes, avoid keeping louvers at steep vertical angles for prolonged periods to prevent condensate formation and dripping. Also, in cooling or heating modes, steep vertical louver angles can restrict airflow, reducing device efficiency.
Operation Safety
Observe safety precautions when operating the air conditioner. Do not place fingers or objects near air intake or outlet zones. Inside the unit is a high-speed fan that can cause injury if safety guidelines are violated.
