High-Temperature Self-Cleaning Mode of the Indoor Unit Heat Exchanger iCLEAN (Auto Clean, Self-Clean, X-FAN) in Air Conditioners
General Purpose of the Clean Function
The self-cleaning function is designed to maintain the cleanliness of the internal components of the air conditioner, primarily the evaporator. The program is aimed at removing accumulated dust, dirt, moisture, and microorganisms from the surfaces of the heat exchanger. This helps preserve the operational efficiency of the device, improves indoor air quality, and prevents the development of mold and bacteria inside the unit.
Operating Principle of the iCLEAN / SELF-CLEAN Function
The self-cleaning function is activated using a button on the remote control when the air conditioner is switched off. Once started, the unit performs a sequential programmed cycle consisting of several stages aimed at removing contaminants and moisture from the surface of the heat exchanger and internal components of the indoor unit.
1. Cooling stage: the air conditioner switches to intensive cooling mode, causing moisture to condense or a thin layer of frost to form on the surface of the evaporator. The condensate helps remove dust and small contaminants from the heat exchanger surface.
2. Heating stage: the unit switches to heating mode. The accumulated frost is defrosted, residual moisture is removed, and the surface undergoes thermal treatment, providing partial sterilization of the heat exchanger and internal air channels.
3. Ventilation stage: the ventilation mode is activated, ensuring final drying of the internal elements, temperature equalization inside the unit, and removal of any remaining moisture through the circulation of warm air.
In some models, the self-cleaning function may be implemented with additional closing of the air louvers, air purging, and use of only the heating mode without the freezing stage.
Implementation Features
Depending on the model, the self-cleaning function may be accompanied by visual indication. The indoor unit display shows the code “SC” or “CL”, indicating an active self-cleaning cycle. In certain design variations, automatic closing of the air louvers and use of only the heating mode without a freezing stage are additionally applied.
Duration and Operating Features of iCLEAN / SELF-CLEAN
The duration of the self-cleaning mode may vary depending on the air conditioner model and the algorithm set by the manufacturer. Typically, it lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, the air conditioner may automatically switch between cooling, heating, and ventilation modes without user intervention. The indoor fan may stop and restart depending on the cycle stage.
Some models may produce clicking or other sounds during self-cleaning due to temperature changes, movement of internal components, or operation of servomotors. This is a normal characteristic of this function.
Control of the Cleaning Mode
To activate the self-cleaning function manually, press the CLEAN (cleaning) switch with the tip of a ballpoint pen or a similar object. Each press of this switch changes the indicator in the following sequence:
The louvers move to the position corresponding to the cooling mode, and the cleaning process begins. To stop the function, simply press the button again or use the power on/off button. Once started, the process should be allowed to complete. If there is no user intervention, the function stops automatically after the set time. Typically, the duration is up to one hour. Upon completion, it is recommended to additionally check the condition of the filters and, if necessary, perform manual cleaning.
Advantages of Using the Clean Mode
Maintaining Performance
Removing contaminants from the heat exchanger and internal components ensures free airflow. This maintains cooling and heating efficiency and reduces the load on the compressor and fans.
Improving Air Quality
Removing dust, microorganisms, and moisture prevents their re-release into the indoor air. This is especially important for individuals sensitive to air pollution, including those suffering from allergies or respiratory conditions.
Extending Equipment Service Life
Timely removal of contaminants reduces the risk of corrosion, blockages, and system overload. This helps extend the service life of the air conditioner and reduces the frequency of service calls.
Usage Recommendations
Regularity
The function is recommended for use after prolonged operation of the air conditioner or at the end of the season. This prepares the device for subsequent use and minimizes the risk of contamination.
Additional Maintenance Measures
SELF CLEAN will not clean the filters of your air conditioner; this must be done manually. Scheduled technical maintenance of the equipment should also be performed, including inspection of the drainage system and heat exchanger condition.
